Red Rock
Red Rock captures the raw, enduring presence of a solitary sandstone formation beneath an expansive sky. Broad, confident brushstrokes build the rock’s layered textures — warm ochres, deep siennas and rusted crimsons that suggest heat, age and the slow work of wind and water. Light falls across the face of the formation in strong planes, creating sharp contrasts between sunlit surfaces and cool, shadowed crevices.
Above, a wide, open sky balances the composition. Subtle gradations of pale blue and soft grey evoke distance and atmosphere while occasional wisps of cloud add movement and scale. The horizon sits low, emphasising the monumentality of the sandstone and the quiet stillness of the surrounding landscape.
The palette is pared back but intense, favouring earthy reds and browns set against muted sky tones. Texture is an important element: impasto and layered glazing convey both the rugged surface of the rock and the smoothing effects of time. The overall mood is one of solitude and resilience — a study in how a single natural form can command presence and tell a story of endurance.
